The 1989 Mercedes-Benz 260E, part of the W124 series, exemplified the brand’s engineering excellence and understated luxury during the late 1980s. Introduced in October 1989, the 260E featured a 2.6-liter inline-six engine (M103) producing 160 horsepower paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in about 9 seconds and reached a top speed of 134 mph.
Designed by Bruno Sacco, the W124 series was notable for its aerodynamic efficiency, structural integrity, and advanced safety features, including crumple zones and a rigid passenger cell. Built with Mercedes’ hallmark rear-wheel-drive layout, the 260E was praised for its solid build quality, smooth ride, and advanced safety features for its time, including anti-lock brakes. It offered a refined driving experience with independent suspension and a comfortable, well-appointed interior.
Contemporary reviews highlighted its balance of performance and comfort. Car and Driver noted, “The 260E delivers a composed ride and precise steering, making it a standout in the executive sedan class.” And for enthusiasts today, the 1989 260E remains a symbol of Mercedes-Benz’s golden era of over-engineering and timeless design.
