Huntsville, Alabama — or “Rocket City,” as we know it — is home to NASA rocket-propulsion research and development. Nothing quite encapsulates the launch and excitement of the region as this out-of-world collection of cars including movie cars and tributes, desirable classics, and a rocket truck itself. 3… 2… 1… These cars are ready for blastoff, and all will be launched to new homes and garages as all lots are presented with NO RESERVE. * * * The “Coyote X” from the ABC TV show Hardcastle and McCormick is a memorable vehicle that captured the imagination of many during the 1980s. The show, which aired from 1983 to 1986, featured Judge Milton C. Hardcastle and ex-con Mark McCormick teaming up to fight crime, with the Coyote X playing a central role in their adventures.
The Coyote X was a custom-built kit car designed specifically for the show. It was based on the chassis of a Volkswagen Beetle and utilized a Manta Montage fiberglass body modeled after the McLaren M6GT, a concept car envisioned by Bruce McLaren as a road-going version of his Can-Am race cars. The TV Coyote X cars were constructed by Mike Fennel Enterprises.
Initially, the Coyote X was powered by a Porsche 914 engine, which contributed to its distinctive exhaust note during chase scenes, though a new version was built on a DeLorean DMC-12 chassis for the later seasons. Despite these changes, the original Manta Montage VW-based Coyote remains the most recognizable version among fans.
After the show concluded, the original cars were auctioned off to private collectors. Enthusiasts have also created replicas, celebrating the legacy of Hardcastle and McCormick — like this Coyote X replica.
