Description

Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer another selection of vehicles from The SugarCreek Collection. This private collection in southwestern Ohio is supported by its own in-house restoration and maintenance shop, with a full-time staff of craftsmen. The garage is a true spectrum of car enthusiast dreams, ranging from unfinished restorations to the most recent sale of the SEMA-exhibited 1,000 HP 1962 Dodge Power Wagon, supporting the Mike Rowe WORKS Foundation. Thirty select cars from the collection are being offered just in time for spring. Whether awaiting restoration, preserved showroom stock, restored to like-new, or tastefully modified, these cars and trucks are truly SugarCreek quality.

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle is considered by many to be one of the best-looking Detroit muscle cars ever built, owing in part to its freshly redesigned sheet metal, which gave the car a more curvaceous and sporting appearance. The second-generation Chevrolet Chevelle offered a powerful punch to back up those good looks. How popular was the ’70 Chevelle SS? For the second year in a row it was Detroit’s most popular Muscle Car, having dethroned the pioneering Pontiac GTO in 1969.

While the monster SS 454 Chevelles grabbed all the headlines, the SS 396 was by far the most popular, striking the right balance between price, performance, and insurance premiums. Known as RPO L34, this option would grant customers a glorious 396 Turbo-Jet V8 along with a slew of Super Sport performance enhancements. But the SS also had a comfortable, good looking interior and smooth, quiet ride.

Compared to some of the rough and ready muscle cars of the era, Car Life magazine said glowingly of the 1970 SS 396, “The best-selling Supercar isn’t the quickest. But it looks tough. And it’s kind to women and children.” Or as the 1970 Chevelle brochure stated, “The performance starts as you’re seated.”

 Ownership History

This 1970 Chevelle SS 396 Super Sport Coupe was built the first week of May 1970. The SugarCreek body shop performed an extensive frame-on restoration in 2012, including floor pan replacements. It was resprayed the original Tuxedo Black paint (19) with the white “Stereo Stripes” that were part of the ZL2 Cowl Induction hood package. The interior was upgraded from the original black vinyl bench seats to Ivory vinyl upholstery with bucket seats and center shifter.    Additional Notes
