Description

Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer a selection of vehicles from the SugarCreek Collection. This private collection in southeastern Ohio is supported by its own in-house restoration and maintenance shop, with a full-time staff of craftsmen. The garage is a true spectrum of car enthusiast dreams, ranging from unfinished restorations to the most recent SEMA-exhibited 1,000 horsepower 1962 Dodge Power Wagon. Sixteen select cars from the collection are being offered in time for the holidays. Whether awaiting restoration, preserved showroom stock, restored to like-new, or tastefully modified, these cars and trucks are truly SugarCreek quality.

It’s fitting that the Road Runner wears a cartoon bird, because this muscle car tells a truly entertaining story. In the mid-1960s, Plymouth wanted to go after the youth market. So, executives gave Jack Smith a small budget and few months to create a big-power, bare-bones model based on the unassuming Belvedere. And between Plymouth’s market research, Smith’s hard-charging efforts, and assistant Gordon Cherry’s idea to use Warner Brothers’ cartoon bird as its name, the 1968 Road Runner was born.

The new B-body was available only in coupe or hardtop, and only offered with a 335-horsepower 383 or a 425-horsepower 426 Hemi. Combined with its affordable $2,896 starting price, cartoon tie-in, and signature horn, the Road Runner was a runaway success. In 1969 it got a mild refresh, including a new hood design, bucket seats with a center console, a convertible body style, and the addition of a 390-horsepower, 440 cu-in Six Barrel engine option. Sales nearly doubled, with a whopping 84,420 sold.

This recently restored 1969 Road Runner 440 Six Barrel hardtop tribute is ready for cruise nights, with a swapped-in 440 V8 commanding a TorqueFlite automatic. Disc brakes live behind aftermarket rims, and an aluminum radiator and electric fans keep everything cool.
