Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer another selection of vehicles from The SugarCreek Collection. This private collection in southwestern Ohio is supported by its own in-house restoration and maintenance shop, with a full-time staff of craftsmen. The garage is a true spectrum of car enthusiast dreams, ranging from unfinished restorations to the most recent sale of the SEMA-exhibited 1,000 HP 1962 Dodge Power Wagon, supporting the Mike Rowe WORKS Foundation. Thirty select cars from the collection are being offered just in time for spring. Whether awaiting restoration, preserved showroom stock, restored to like-new, or tastefully modified, these cars and trucks are truly SugarCreek quality.

Prior to leaving office in 1969, President Lyndon Baines Johnson commissioned a presidential limousine to use during his retirement in Austin, Texas. Of course, there was only one company to handle the job: Lehmann-Peterson of Chicago.

Formed in 1963, the partnership of Skip Lehmann and Robert Peterson proved its worth — first to Ford Motor Company and eventually to the appropriate government officials — when it took a 1963 Lincoln Continental, stretched it by three feet, and made an unannounced visit to Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, to show off its new executive limousine. Ford engineers were skeptical, since research showed that any car stretched more than three inches would suffer greatly from metal fatigue. After extensive testing, the Lehmann-Peterson proved to be stronger than the standard Continental. A deal was soon struck, and the company produced executive limousines until 1970.

Weighing 5,100 pounds, Johnson's personal post-presidential Lincoln limo was powered by a 460 cubic-inch V8 engine and equipped with a radio, television, and telephone, as well as ballistic armor and bulletproof glass, per Secret Service requirements. LBJ’s final ride in it came on January 16, 1973, when he attended the inauguration of Texas Governor Dolph Brisco; Johnson passed away six days later.

While Johnson’s personal executive limousine is on display at the LBJ Presidential Library, this Lehmann-Peterson Lincoln, a near twin without the bulletproof requirements, is believed to be one of four used for visiting dignitaries at LBJ’s Austin, Texas, ranch. It was acquired by The SugarCreek Collection in 2023.
