*  *  *    Mercedes-Benz’s ten-year-old R230 platform was nearing the end of production in 2011. But before the next SL chassis was revealed, the R230 went out swinging with the SL 63 AMG. A recent facelift had endowed the SL 63 with attractive revisions including a new front end — but the big news was underneath that sexy two-seater’s bodywork. 

A new, hand-built, naturally aspirated V8 provided big power, huge torque, and a 7,200-rpm redline — a capable successor to the previous year’s supercharged V8. And that rev-happy mill worked in concert with a seven-speed, multi-clutch transmission that offered lightning-fast shifts, and four drive modes for automatic or manual shifting. 

A fully independent ABC active suspension helped the SL 63 corner harder than a 4,200-pound car had any right to, while big four-wheel discs hauled it down from speed. All while the occupants were ensconced in an AMG-exclusive leather interior, enjoying Premium Sound and Airscarf headrests. Motor Trend reported, “The SL 63’s claimed 0-to-62-mph time of 4.7 seconds seems conservative, but there's no doubt it goes around corners like no other SL in memory.”      

Aside from its incredible performance, this 2011 SL 63 AMG makes a visual statement as well, with Diamond White paint over exclusive Designo Porcelain leather.
