When it debuted in 1987, General Motors called the Allanté “The New Spirit of Cadillac.” The limited production luxury convertible was conceived to compete against the Mercedes-Benz SL and Jaguar XJS. Famous Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina designed the Allanté’s body, and the cars were manufactured just outside of Turin, Italy. Specially equipped Boeing 747s flew 56 bodies at a time to Detroit for final assembly with a domestically manufactured drivetrain.
The new Allanté rode on fully independent strut-type suspension with power rack and pinion steering, four-wheel power disc brakes with Bosch ABS, and an electronically controlled four-speed automatic. All were convertibles. Interior features included multi-adjustable Recaro leather seats, digital graphic instrumentation, and Delco Bose AM/FM/cassette audio.
The front-wheel-drive 1992 Allanté was equipped with new Road Sensing Suspension (RSS), an advanced system that adjusted the suspension based on road conditions, enhancing ride comfort and handling. Under the hood was a 200-horsepower, 4.5-liter V8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the Allanté received a luxurious interior with leather seats, digital instrumentation, and advanced audio systems, reflecting Cadillac's commitment to comfort and innovation.
