Introduced in 1985 and produced until 1991, the 560 SEL (Sonderklasse Extra Long) featured a long-wheelbase chassis, offering limousine-like rear legroom and a cabin trimmed in rich leather and wood. Powered by a 5.6-liter V8 producing 238 horsepower, it delivered smooth, commanding performance with a top speed of around 130 mph. It came equipped with advanced features for its time, including anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, power-adjustable heated seats, and optional rear reclining seats. The 560 SEL also features Mercedes’ signature self-leveling rear suspension, ensuring a smooth ride regardless of the load.
Contemporary magazines lauded its refinement. Car and Driver once noted, “The 560 SEL is less a car and more a statement — of taste, of success, of engineering excellence,” while one Road & Track editor stated it “Feels carved from a single block of granite.”
Today, the 560 SEL remains a symbol of Mercedes-Benz’s golden era — an enduring classic that still turns heads and commands respect.
