Description

The Volkswagen Type 2 originated as a practical factory transport concept and evolved into one of the most recognizable vehicles of the mid-20th century. Known as the Bus, Kombi, Microbus, or Transporter, it complemented the Beetle by sharing its air-cooled flat-four engine and chassis design. Produced in multiple configurations — including panel vans, passenger wagons, and campers—the Type 2 became widely used for commercial, recreational, and personal purposes. More than one million split-window examples were built, establishing a lasting presence in automotive history.

This 1961 Volkswagen Type 2 “Four-Door Station Wagon” was assembled on November 16, 1960, and delivered through Miller Motors in Steubenville, Ohio. It accumulated 29,653 miles before being parked in 1968 due to transmission failure. Rediscovered in 1994, the vehicle underwent a careful reconditioning process focused on originality. The exterior was refinished in its factory Mango Green (L346) and Seagull Grey (L347) colors, while the interior retains original paint, seat covers, mats, and Sekurit glass. The numbers-matching 1200cc engine remains largely untouched, with only minor resealing performed. A period-correct transmission replaced the failed original. Accompanied by documentation, awards, and original accessories, this Type 2 represents an exceptionally authentic example of Volkswagen’s early Transporter design.
