After celebrating a hat trick of wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi and their race department, Audi Sport Gmbh would commission a mid-engine V10-powered concept car dubbed the Audi Le Mans Quattro. First displayed at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Le Man Quattro would leave a substantial impression and Audi’s factory in Neckarsulm, Germany was renovated to produce a new production sports car, christened the R8 after Audi’s Le Mans winning racing car. Entrusting their in-house center for motorsport and high-performance models Audi Sport to construct this new model, Audi’s first-ever supercar would make its debut at the Paris Auto Show in 2006. Powered by a high revving, 4.2-liter V8 paired with a six-speed open-gate manual transmission, the Audi R8 left an excellent first impression with Autoweek stating that, “Simply, the Audi R8 is in a class by itself”.
