Description
In less than a year, the Viper went from a conversation between president Bob Lutz and designer Tom Gale, to appearing in the North American International Auto Show. With so much enthusiasm and excitement from the public, it was ordered to be developed. Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca ordered the car to be built with limited resources. With a small $70 million budget and just a year later, Carroll Shelby was piloting a pre-production Viper as a pace car in the Indianapolis 500.
The Viper has come and gone multiple times throughout its history, but the second generation (ZB I and ZB II) of Viper has become a go-to for enthusiasts. Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology group (SRT) took stylistic cues from the first generation and paired it with high-performance racing technology. 2009 marked a bittersweet time for the Viper’s history, as then-CEO Ralph Gilles announced the end of Viper production. Yet, less than six months later the Viper became the first production car at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT to break the two-minute mark on the three-mile Outer Course.
The ACR (American Club Racer) model was the most exclusive, and highest performance Viper available. It featured an 8.4L V10 engine producing 600 horsepower paired to a six-speed manual transmission. Carbon fiber aerodynamics were designed for additional downforce, similar to its adjustable rear wing. Dodge produced three Diamond Black with dual Red stripe Vipers in 2009: one roadster, one coupe, and this ACR being auctioned, making this a rare, highly-desirable Viper with just 286 miles from new.
