“Buy it… or watch it go by,” said the Ford advertorials in 1968 publications. “Carroll Shelby has pulled the trick of the year. He’s combined Ford’s new drag champion 428 Cobra Jet engine with his complete road car, the Cobra GT 500. Result? Cobra GT 500-KR… King of the Road.”

Truth in advertising, Shelby had truly begun to cement his legacy in the car world in 1968. And in 2005, Ford wanted to find the Mustang’s soul again. Chief design engineer Hau Thai-Tang first saw a Mustang in 1975, as he and his family fled war-torn Vietnam and immigrated to the United States. There, on the Army base, was a 1968 Mustang parked that would later serve as inspiration to what the Mustang’s design should evoke when seen. Thus, the fifth generation S197 Mustang was born.

The 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR was a high-performance, limited production 40th anniversary to the original King of the Road. It featured a supercharged 5.4L V8 engine producing a reported 540 horsepower, unique carbon fiber hood, SVT-tuned suspension, cementing the legendary King of the Road Status with efforts from both Shelby American and Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT).
