Description

The 2008 Dodge Challenger marked the triumphant return of this iconic muscle car, which had been a symbol of American automotive performance and style since its debut in 1970. The original Challenger was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, and it featured a range of powerful engines, including the legendary Hemi V8.  

After a 34-year hiatus, the new Challenger’s aggressive styling was thanks to young designer Michael “Casti” Castiglione. The Challenger drew its platform and suspension components from the Mercedes-Benz W211 platform, the basis of the German automaker’s 2002–2009 E-Class cars. Power came from the new 6.1-liter Gen III Hemi, a clean-sheet-of-paper design that created 425 hp in the top SRT8 version, mated to the WA580 five-speed automatic with AutoStick. 

Production of the new 2008 Challenger started late, and only 6,400 “First Edition” cars for the U.S. market were built during that abbreviated first year. All Challengers in 2008 were SRT8 models, and each received a numbered dash plaque and unique carbon-fiber-like hood stripes, and paint was limited to three color choices. Compared to the contemporary Mustang Shelby GT500, Motor Trend said “… the Challenger is simply a better-sorted automobile, a 20th-century icon reborn with 21st-century sophistication and poise.”
