The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), popularly known as the Humvee, is a versatile and rugged military vehicle produced by AM General, designed to replace older models like the M151 Jeep and the M561 "Gama Goat." Introduced to great acclaim for its adaptability and durability, the Humvee saw extensive use during the Gulf War of 1991, where its performance in desert environments helped inspire the civilian Hummer brand. Despite its initial success, the Humvee's unarmored design proved insufficient against threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during the Iraq War, leading to a rapid deployment of up-armored variants and a transition to Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles for improved protection.
