For the all-new 2005 Ford Mustang, Ford pulled much in the way of design influences from the 1969 and 1970 Boss series and Mach 1. Although the exterior was decidedly retro, the underpinnings were entirely new for the first time in 25 years. The new chassis structure used MacPherson struts for the independent front suspension and a three-link live rear axle.  The Mustang GT boasted an aluminum-built 4.6-liter V8 engine incorporating variable camshaft timing. Generating 300 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm, this model exhibited impressive performance numbers: completing a quarter-mile test in 13.7 seconds at 103 mph and accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. Additionally, the GT was outfitted with a limited-slip differential featuring carbon-fiber clutch discs akin to those utilized in the 2003 to 2004 SVT Cobra and the 2007 Shelby GT500. Enhancing its handling capabilities, the Mustang GT boasted a sturdier suspension setup, larger 12.4-inch front brake discs, and standard four-channel ABS paired with traction control. Further notable features included a two-piece drive shaft, stainless steel dual exhaust system, standard grille-mounted fog lights, and 17 inch wheels all culminating in what Road & Track called “The best Mustang ever.”
