The Mazda Miata floored the enthusiast community when it was introduced in the fall of 1989 for the ’90 model year. Few thought that there could ever be a re-imagined British roadster quite as competent, dependable, and utterly charming as this Japanese drop top. As Car and Driver magazine described it, “The Miata marked the return of the honest sports car, but with all of the practical benefits of a modern automobile.”
Known globally as the MX-5, the Miata reinvented a vehicle segment in ways that its contemporaries like the Toyota MR2, the Australian Mercury Capri, and even the Pontiac Fiero never could. And, perhaps more importantly, it thrived. The 2003 Mazda MX-5 Miata is part of the second-generation Miata, known as the NB series, which ran from 1999 to 2005. Building on the legacy of the original NA Miata, the 2003 version continued to deliver a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive roadster experience with a focus on driving purity and affordability.
The Miata adopted a sleeker, more modern look with fixed headlights and a more refined interior. Under the hood, the roadster featured a 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four engine producing 142 horsepower, paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
