Back in 1953, Chevrolet called its new Corvette “first of the dream cars to come true.” A half-century later, the fifth-generation Corvette was the most radically redesigned version of America’s sports car ever. The new C5 was stiffer and lighter than the previous generation C4 due to the innovative use of hydroformed frame rails. 

Other new features included a drive-by-wire throttle and a variable effort power steering system, but most notably, the C5 would introduce the world to the now legendary all-aluminum “LS” V8 engine family. That powerplant was backed by either a four-speed overdrive automatic or six-speed manual transaxle, a feature that improved not only the weight distribution but also increased interior space. 

The 2003 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe marked the 50th anniversary of the iconic American sports car. Power was by the 5.7-liter LS1 V8 engine, producing 350 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. While a convertible and the Z06 Hardtop were also available, the Coupe with removable Targa top was a popular version, allowing all-weather comfort or top off enjoyment.” Or as Motor Trend stated, “Corvette says ‘fast’ in any language”—especially when finished in hot Torch Red paint.
