Description

The Shelby Series 1, unveiled as a prototype at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show, marked Carroll Shelby’s first-ever “clean-sheet” sports car — designed and engineered entirely by Shelby American rather than built from an existing platform. Intended to evoke the spirit of the original Cobra with modern sophistication, the 1999 model was powered by a 4.0 L Oldsmobile Aurora DOHC V8 (producing 320 hp and 290 lb‑ft of torque), paired with a six-speed ZF manual transaxle and a mid-front engine configuration for balanced handling. Its extruded aluminum chassis and bonded honeycomb panels, along with carbon-fiber and fiberglass bodywork, resulted in a remarkably light curb weight of 2,650 lb. Performance was impressive: 0–60 mph in approximately 4.4 seconds, a quarter‑mile in 12.8 seconds, and a top speed around 170 mph. As Motor Trend noted, “It doesn’t look like any other car… it certainly doesn’t drive like any other car. It’s as much all‑Shelby as you can get.”

Despite ambitious plans to produce up to 500 units, only 249 were built, all as 1999 models. And this Series 1 — showing just 624 original miles — is the only example produced in Oldsmobile Centennial Silver with painted Hugger Orange stripes.
