Description

In the 1980s, Japanese automakers saw the opportunity to leverage the then-weak value of the Japanese Yen and their sophisticated manufacturing processes to effectively clone German luxury offerings at a fraction of the cost. Honda led the charge with the 1985 Acura Legend, followed closely by Toyota’s Lexus LS400 debuting in January 1989. When pitted against the industry-leading Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Lexus made up for its lack of heritage with its bulletproof reliability and a base price almost half that of the Mercedes. The second-generation LS400 arrived in 1995 with Toyota claiming that 90 percent of its components were either all-new or completely redesigned, including its updated 4.0-liter “1UZ-FE” V8 engine which was both more powerful and fuel efficient than the outgoing model.
