The 1996 Dodge Ram Indy Special was a bold tribute to the 80th running of the Indianapolis 500. Being chosen as the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 is a huge honor for any American automaker, and for 1996, that honor went to the new Dodge Viper GTS coupe. 

Dodge also introduced a special edition Ram 1500 pickup to complement it, The Official Truck of the 80th Indianapolis 500. Painted in Brilliant Pearl Blue with Quartz White racing stripes, the truck mirrored the Viper’s livery and was powered by a 5.9-liter Magnum V8 engine producing 245 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. Three prototype pace trucks were built for the event, each fully loaded with features like cruise control, power accessories, and premium interior trim. One of these was delivered directly to Tony George, then-president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The truck was used during the race weekend, including leading race cars on a rain-soaked track. 

To commemorate the event, Dodge also released a limited production run of 3,212 (2,846 for the US market) road-going Ram Indy Special Edition models based on the Ram 1500 Laramie SLT. These trucks became instant collectibles, celebrated for their unique styling and connection to motorsport history — including this two-owner example showing just 16,179 miles from new.
