Description
The long-running Jaguar XJS (first designated as the XJ-S) is a grand touring luxury coupe and convertible produced by British automaker Jaguar from 1975–96. Introduced as a successor to the legendary E-Type, the XJS was designed to offer a more refined and comfortable driving experience while retaining Jaguar’s signature elegance and performance.
Initially launched with a 5.3-liter V12 engine, the XJS underwent numerous updates throughout its 21-year production run. In the 1980s, Jaguar introduced a 3.6-liter inline-six and later a 4.0-liter AJ6/AJ16 engine, offering improved efficiency and reliability. A convertible version was introduced in 1988, broadening its appeal.
In May 1991, under Ford Motor Company’s ownership as part of its Premier Auto Group, the XJS was relaunched in its final form, dropping the hyphen from the model’s name and marketing it simply as the XJS. The redesign included the removal of frames from the rear side windows, creating the illusion of enlarged windows despite retaining identical glass apertures as previous models. Inside, the XJS received luxurious appointments, including standard leather upholstery and real wood trim.
The curvy roadster became a symbol of refined British motoring. Production ended in 1996, making way for the new XK8.
