Since 1967, the Toyota Century has been the company’s premier luxury model, even exceeding Lexus in prestige and appointments. Despite this, the Century was never intended to compete with such ultra-luxury marques as Rolls Royce or Maybach, instead being positioned as a car for hard-working business executives and government officials. Toyota’s marketing slogan for the car sums things up this way: “The Century is acquired through persistent work, the kind that is done in a plain but formal suit.” Designed to provide the quietest, smoothest, and most serene chauffeured experience possible, power comes from an aluminum-block 4.0-liter V8. Self-leveling rear air suspension allowed the Century to glide seamlessly through heavy traffic as the neatly tailored executive was cocooned in the fine wool rear seats with heating, reclining, and massaging functions. Never officially sold in the United States, this magnificent machine was produced in low numbers and remains a rare and luxurious Japanese modern classic, especially on this side of the Pacific.
