Description
The 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition marked the debut of Mazda’s limited-production Miata series, setting the tone for future collectible variants. Produced in a run of just 3,997 units for the U.S. and Canadian markets, this Special Edition introduced a more refined take on the lightweight roadster formula that made the Miata an instant classic.
Finished exclusively in British Racing Green over a Camel tan leather interior, the 1991 Special Edition stood out with upscale appointments including a Nardi wood shift knob and handbrake lever, stainless steel door sill plates, and Special Edition badging. Under the hood, it retained the NA-generation’s 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a Viscous limited-slip differential for improved traction and handling.
While benefiting from recent maintenance, this example retains its original character. It includes a color-matched factory hardtop with dolly and cover, a new convertible soft-top with zip-out rear window (installed in April 2025), and a fully refurbished dashboard—stripped and refinished to address the common “sticky dash.” As the first-ever Special Edition Miata, the 1991 SE holds a unique place in the model’s history, and this particular British Racing Dream is ready for its next caretaker to enjoy.
