Richard McAdam, known as “Doc” to his friends and family, epitomizes "work hard, play hard." Born and raised in rural Appalachia, Doc went on to become a renowned neurosurgeon in Virginia. Patients could regularly find Doc pulling into the hospital parking lot in one of his beloved Cobras or high-performance Mustangs. These cars were driven and enjoyed by Doc through the years, taking his family on back road joyrides on sunny day commutes. The new, fuel-injected muscle car era began in the mid-1980s. When the Fox-Body Mustang’s V8 began utilizing electronic fuel injection, “5.0” became synonymous with some of the coolest hot rods on the street.

The LX 5.0, introduced in 1989, offered two advantages over the aggressive GT: instead of a heavy body kit, it utilized the simple, clean styling that had captivated Fox body buyers for years. Because of the LX’s lighter weight, it was quicker than its more aggressive stablemate. Factor in the open-air freedom of a convertible, and cruising for unsuspecting challengers became a top-down affair.

Credit for that confidence came from the fuel-injected 5.0L V8: factory equipped with high-flow heads, a roller camshaft, and tubular shorty headers, its sharp throttle response and impressive power and torque meant that V8-powered Mustangs could run a quarter-mile sprint in the 14s. Thanks to capable handling, impressive braking, and stunning good looks, the Mustang emerged victorious in Car and Driver’s shootout with its GM rivals, the IROC-Z and Formula.

This example has been refinished in Wild Strawberry contrasted over replacement Scarlet Red tweed upholstery, and it has a power-operated black convertible top. Doc McAdams purchased it from a local friend, and drove it for over a decade.
