Description
Handcrafted luxury does not need to cost a fortune. The 1988–91 Reatta was Buick’s personal luxury car, and each one was hand built at the Reatta Craft Center in Lansing, Michigan. The cars moved from station to station on computer-guided platforms, allowing workers additional time and care in assembly. To prove the point, each car included a “Craftsman’s Log” detailing the process.
Under the bold body, designed by David McIntosh, the front-drive Reatta featured the powertrain of its sibling, the Riviera, including the smooth “LN3” 3.8-liter V6 with tuned-port fuel injection and counter-rotating balance shaft. Along with a “4T60” four-speed automatic transaxle, the Reatta was equipped with four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.
The 1990–91 Reatta received a revised instrument panel and console that replaced the troublesome electronic touchscreen wizardry of the 1988–89 cars with conventional controls. These improvements, and the addition of the convertible model, resulted in 8,515 Reattas produced in 1990, including 2,132 drop-tops. Little wonder 1990 was the most popular of the handcrafted Reatta’s four-year run.
