Predating high-performance pickups of the 1990s like the GMC Cyclone and Ford F-150 Lightning, world-renowned tuner and manufacturer Shelby Automotive led the charge with the one-year-only 1989 Dodge Dakota Shelby. Shelby’s first-ever pickup truck, the Dakota Shelby, was the latest in a line of successful Chrysler-Shelby products which included the Shelby Charger and Omni GLH. Unlike those four-cylinder-powered cars, the Dakota Shelby was Shelby’s first application of the 318 cu-in “LA” V8 with an electric engine fan rather than a belt-driven fan to fit into the pickup’s engine compartment. This also yielded an additional five horsepower for a total output of 175 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The package also encompassed a specially calibrated suspension featuring gas-charged shock absorbers, a limited-slip differential with a 3.90:1 axle ratio, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes – perfect for hauling cargo or sprinting from 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds. Finished in either Exotic Red or Bright White, only 1,500 examples were produced in total, making this muscle-truck a rare sight today.
