A handcrafted luxury Buick? The 1988–91 Buick Reatta was a throwback to the days of coachbuilt automobiles, and Buick’s personal luxury car was hand built at the Reatta Craft Center in Lansing, Michigan. The cars moved from station to station on computer-guided platforms, allowing workers additional time and care in assembly. To prove the point, each car included a “Craftsman’s Log” detailing the process. Under the bold body designed by David McIntosh, the front-drive Reatta featured the powertrain of its sibling, the Riviera, including the smooth “LN3” 3.8-liter V6 with tuned-port injection and counter-rotating balance shaft. Along with a “4T60” four-speed automatic transaxle the Reatta was equipped with four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. One of the Reatta’s most striking features is its touch-screen system, called the Electronic Control Center (ECC), which was considered to be one of the most advanced interfaces of its day. Remarkably full-featured, ECC provides access to audio, climate control, and trip computer functions, and it even includes vehicle-diagnostics functions.

The Buick Reatta enjoyed a successful four-year run due to its unique combination of handcrafted luxury and technical wizardry.
