By the late 1970s, Ford recognized a growing appetite for trucks that blended utility with comfort, leading to the introduction of the Lariat trim — named after the cowboy’s lasso — as a premium option emphasizing interior refinement and style.

The 1987 model year fell within the seventh generation of the F-Series (1980–1986 was the sixth, with the seventh running 1987–1991), marking a significant refresh. The 1987 F-150 XLT Lariat received a revised front fascia with aero-styled headlights, a cleaner grille, and a more modern dashboard interior. It was offered in Regular Cab, SuperCab, and Styleside configurations.
