The genesis of the Porsche 944, introduced in 1982, can be traced back to the mid-1970s and Porsche's 924 model. Engineers chose a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a 2+2 seating configuration, creating a practical sports car for everyday use and the first of the so-called “transaxle” cars. The V8-powered 928 was next, and based on its sales success — and a little styling help from the 924 GTP race car from 1980 — the 944 was born.
The new Porsche model featured a sleek, aerodynamic design that incorporated box fender flares and pop-up headlights, both distinctive features of the era. Under the hood was a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine, which was essentially a Porsche 928 V8 engine sliced in half and was significantly more potent than the 924's Audi-derived powerplant. This engine gained more power as the year went by, and coupled with precise handling and a balanced chassis, it delivered an exciting driving experience.
This 1986 Porsche 944 has no known mechanical issues, but it will require some cosmetic attention to return to its former glory.
