The 1986 Cadillac Eldorado was built on a shortened version of the E-body front-wheel-drive platform and featured Cadillac's proprietary 4.1-liter V8 engine, mounted transversely in the engine bay. This engine produced 130 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque and was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The Eldorado was only available as a two-door coupe, with the previous generation’s convertible option discontinued.

For suspension, the Eldorado borrowed a page from the Corvette, utilizing a single fiberglass transverse leaf spring for a fully independent rear end. It also came standard with four-wheel disc brakes and electronic leveling. Inside, the 1986 Eldorado offered a modern driving experience with a fully digital display, bucket seats with lumbar support, cruise control, and many other comforts and conveniences typical of the era.
