Description

America’s first all-wheel drive sport utility vehicle also had the heart of champions. Long before automobile-based crossovers dominated the landscape the AMC Eagle showed it could be done. The mastermind behind this pioneer was Roy Lunn, who was the chief engineer of the dominating Ford GT racing program in the 1960s, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1966 to 1969. He joined American Motors’ Jeep division in 1971 and began experimenting with adding all-wheel drive to cars as well as trucks. Using a revolutionary viscous-coupling transfer case created by FF Developments in his native England, Lunn adapted the system to the AMC Concord. Launched in 1980, the Eagle was lauded by the press for its all-weather safety and became the Official Vehicle of the National Ski Patrol. It was also used by the California Highway Patrol in mountainous regions. Just how good was Lunn’s all-wheel drive system? It was also used by the Peugeot 205 T16, Lancia Delta S4, Ford RS200, and MG Metro 6R4 in the wild FIA Group B rally championships in the 1980s.

This original condition 51,238-mile 1986 AMC Eagle, the upscale Limited model featuring leather interior, is ready for more all-weather adventures.
