“The 1985 Riviera is Buick’s definition of “personal luxury car,” a term that is rather loosely applied elsewhere these days, but definitely belongs right here, where it was created,” the Buick brochure declared that year. In 1979, the sixth-generation Buick Riviera was joined by the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado in adopting shorter, front-wheel-drive platforms. Despite its smaller stature, the Riviera’s interior remained as luxurious and spacious as ever, with available electronic climate control and a Concert Sound six-speaker audio system. A convertible version was now available joining the traditional coupe. Power came from a 5.0-liter V8 with four-speed automatic transmission, though as a sign of the times a diesel engine was optional. Even a sporting T-Type model with turbocharged V6 was available.
Named Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” in 1979, the sixth-generation Riviera remains the best-selling iteration ever. As the 1985 Riviera brochure asked, “Wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick?”
