Description

“The new Corvette marks a dramatic turn in Corvette’s 30-year reign as America’s sports car,” Chevrolet’s brochure announced for the 1984 model year. The fourth-generation C4 Corvette was a drastic change over the C3 generation, developed with an emphasis on improved handling and braking, and as a result, was the first of its breed to use what GM termed “uniframe” construction. This entirely new chassis would feature lightweight construction and fully independent suspension while a sleek exterior design further evolved, incorporating several Corvette hallmarks like pop-up headlights and quad rear taillights. The updated cloth or optional leather interior would include both a digital instrument panel advertised as “the most sophisticated instrumentation package ever offered in a production automobile,” but also “space-age” aircraft-style bucket seats. Only the engine carried over from the C3, Chevy’s fine 5.7-liter (350 cu-in) V8 with “Cross-Fire” fuel injection, backed by a new four-speed automatic transmission.

Despite the excellent performance of the new C4 Corvette, the Z51 Performance Handling Package took it to the next level. Car and Driver magazine (May 1984) called the Z51-equipped Corvette “The Best Handling American Car of 1984.” They wrote, “To no one’s surprise, our Z51-equipped Corvette generated the highest smooth-skidpad figure, 0.86 g.”
