Description

In the 1970s, stringent U.S. regulations threatened the Porsche 911’s future, prompting the development of a potential successor: the 928. This bold departure from Porsche’s rear-engine tradition debuted at the 1977 Geneva Auto Show, and targeted the American market with a front-engine, V8-powered grand tourer. Porsche designer Tony Lapine’s design was futuristic, and featured a low, wide stance, elongated hood, round, sloping rear end, and flush bumpers. The doors, hood, and fenders were made of sensuously shaped aluminum, with one of the 928’s most distinct features—electrically raised circular headlights—flush-mounted into the fenders.

The 928’s lightweight body was complemented by a 4.5-liter water-cooled V8 up front that transferred power to a rear-mounted transaxle for near-perfect weight distribution. And in 1983, the 928S model bowed in America with a more powerful, 4.7-liter engine. S models were also distinguished by a new front chin spoiler and new decklid spoiler for improved aerodynamics, as well as larger brakes, sport shocks, and wider wheels.

This 928S has been lightly modified with larger wheels, modern rubber, and uplevel shocks, and remains a compelling option for enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating driving experience.
