*  *  *    The 1982 Fiat 124 Spider marked a pivotal transition in the life of the beloved Italian roadster. Originally introduced in 1966, the Spider had evolved through several mechanical and cosmetic updates. By 1982, it was known as the Spider 2000, featuring a 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four engine with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, producing around 102 horsepower.

This model year was significant because it was the final year Fiat officially marketed the Spider. In mid-1982, production was handed over to Pininfarina, the design house responsible for the car’s original styling and manufacturing. Pininfarina continued building the car under its own name, branding it as the Pininfarina Spider Azzurra for the U.S. market and Spidereuropa for Europe.

The 1982 Spider retained its classic proportions, elegant lines, and nimble handling. It featured four-wheel disc brakes, a five-speed manual transmission, and a simple, user-friendly convertible top. Optional features included air conditioning, leather seats, and alloy wheels.

As Fiat exited the U.S. market, the 1982 Spider became a collector’s milestone—representing the end of an era for Fiat and the beginning of a new chapter for Pininfarina. Their brochure stated, “The Spider 2000 is the ultimate expression of Italian design and engineering—crafted by Pininfarina, powered by Fiat.”
