Description

Introduced in late 1980, the Ferrari 308 GTSi replaced the carbureted 308 GTS with a more emissions-compliant version featuring Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection — hence the “i” in its name. This change was driven by increasingly strict global emissions regulations, especially in the U.S. market. While the switch to fuel injection slightly reduced peak horsepower (to 205 hp in the U.S. and 214 hp in Europe), it marked a significant evolution in Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 lineup with improved drivability, fuel economy, and cold-start performance. 

The 308 GTSi retained the iconic Pininfarina-designed targa body, with a removable roof panel and signature wedge-shaped styling. Under the hood was a 2.9-liter V8, mounted transversely and paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The car featured independent suspension, ventilated disc brakes, and a tubular steel chassis, offering a balanced and engaging driving experience. 

Inside, the GTSi offered leather bucket seats, a gated shifter, and a revised dashboard layout. Though performance was slightly down from its carbureted predecessor, the 308 GTSi gained fame through its appearance in Magnum, P.I., becoming a pop culture icon. Ferrari produced 1,749 units of the GTSi between 1980 and ’82, making it a collectible bridge between classic and modern Ferrari engineering.

The accompanying CARFAX Vehicle History Report, which begins in January 1991, places this 1981 Ferrari 308 GTSi Targa in California, Nevada, and (since March 2021) Florida. The seller says the car “is in excellent cosmetic condition. No rust whatsoever. Its yellow paint is very rare and stands out among others."
