Description

1978 Porsche 928 Five-Speed Chassis No. 9288201057 Launched at the 1977 Geneva Auto Salon, the Porsche 928 was a luxury GT car intended to replace the company’s evergreen 911. Penned by Wolfgang Möbius, the 928 represented a new direction for the marque with its front mounted V8 engine and futuristic design owing virtually nothing to any prior model. The 928’s unibody was predominantly rust-resistant galvanized steel, however, the doors, front fenders, and hood were crafted from aluminum for weight savings. Aiding the car visually while reducing aerodynamic drag, the 928 featured pop-up headlamps, and integrated bumpers made from impact-resistant polyurethane plastic. Strikingly modern, the interior featured a slanted center console, an adjustable instrument cluster, and practical 2+2 accommodation with the ability to fold down the rear seats to enlarge the cargo area accessible via the large hatchback. The 928, for all of Porsche's efforts, received the 1978 Car of the Year award, the first sports car to do so.
