“The 911 SC is the synthesis of tradition and progress.”— Porsche
The Porsche 911 SC (Super Carrera) represents a pivotal model in the 911 lineup, renowned for its blend of performance and everyday usability. Powered by a 3.0-liter flat-six engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, it produced approximately 180 horsepower, delivering spirited acceleration and a top speed nearing 140 mph. Coupled with a precise five-speed manual transmission (or optional three-speed Sportomatic), the 911 SC offered exhilarating handling thanks to its rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and sophisticated suspension.
Its timeless design, featured classic 911 styling cues like the sloping roofline and iconic headlights, coupled with a driver-focused interior. Porsche also equipped it with galvanized steel body panels, significantly improving rust resistance.
Initially, Porsche considered phasing out the 911 in favor of the 928, but the SC’s popularity and strong sales helped secure the 911’s future. The SC was available in Coupe, Targa, and (from 1983) Cabriolet body styles, appealing to a broad range of Porsche enthusiasts. What Car and Driver said of the 911 SC in 1978 still holds true, “The 911SC rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds — faster than the new 928. It’s a reminder that Porsche’s rear-engine formula still has plenty of life left in it.”
