Volkswagen’s Rabbit Diesel arrived in the U.S. market in 1977 at the height of the energy-conscious era. Known as the Golf Mk1 in Europe, the Rabbit was Volkswagen’s forward-thinking answer to the Beetle’s eventual replacement. It offered front-wheel drive, a hatchback layout, and fuel-sipping efficiency that resonated with buyers facing rising fuel costs. Priced at just $4,828 new, the 1.5-liter inline-four cylinder diesel engine produced 48 horsepower and 58 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. While performance figures were modest—0–60 mph in 16.8 seconds and a top speed of 82 mph—the Rabbit’s economy was groundbreaking, delivering close to 40 mpg in real-world testing. It quickly became one of the most influential economy cars of its time and cemented Volkswagen’s reputation for durable, practical commuter vehicles.

This 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel is a well-preserved example showing just under 92k miles. Finished in a classic tan khaki exterior, the car reflects the understated styling of its era. The interior is trimmed in two-tone brown and gray with faux leather and tweed-like materials, creating a period-correct cabin that remains clean and inviting. Tasteful period modifications include a JVC stereo CD player and an aftermarket sunroof reportedly installed in the late 1970s. The car has benefitted from careful ownership and consistent maintenance.
