“A new kind of Cadillac for a new kind of Cadillac owner.” The 1976 Cadillac Seville was a landmark model that redefined American luxury in response to changing market dynamics. As Cadillac’s first compact luxury sedan, the Seville was developed to counter the growing popularity of European imports like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which offered smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles with refined performance.
Built on a modified version of the Chevrolet Nova’s X-body platform, the Seville was significantly smaller than traditional Cadillacs but retained the brand’s hallmark elegance and comfort. It featured a clean, formal design with crisp lines, a high beltline, and a distinctive “knife-edge” rear styling. Despite its size, it was Cadillac’s most expensive model at launch, reflecting its premium positioning.
Under the hood, the Seville came equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 engine featuring electronic fuel injection—an advanced feature for the time—delivering smoother performance and improved emissions. The interior was richly appointed, with leather upholstery, wood trim, and advanced features like automatic climate control.
The Seville was a commercial success and helped Cadillac attract a younger, more cosmopolitan clientele. It set the stage for future compact luxury sedans and is remembered today as a bold and successful pivot in Cadillac’s storied history.
