Description
During the 1970s, Cadillac, alongside other American automakers, underwent a period of significant transition. While convertibles had been a popular choice among Cadillac owners in the mid-1960s, the demand for such vehicles began to decline in the ensuing years. Despite this shift, Cadillac maintained its reputation for luxury, epitomized by its powerful 500 cu-in V8 engines, even amidst the fuel crisis. However, in 1977, Cadillac embarked on a new direction, introducing a completely redesigned model featuring smaller body dimensions and engines, aimed at improving fuel efficiency. Consequently, 1976 marked the end of an era for full-sized luxury cars equipped with the iconic 500 cu-in V8 engine. With dwindling demand and increasing concerns over government regulations regarding convertibles, Cadillac made the decision to discontinue its convertible model for 1977, making it the sole American manufacturer to offer a convertible in 1976 before dropping it entirely. Though convertibles gradually reappeared during the 1980s, none have quite matched the legendary status of the full-sized luxury convertibles of yesteryears, earning Cadillac's final convertible model the enduring title of the "last convertible ever."
