1973 Volkswagen Type 181 ‘Thing’

Description

While it was officially called the Volkswagen Type 181, it became affectionately known as the “Thing” in the US market. It was designed as a low-cost, rugged, quarter-ton Jeep equivalent for the German military, but with increasing demand from the public for a go-anywhere vehicle, Volkswagen produced a civilian version. This version was aimed at competing against the Citroën Méhari and the Fiat Jolly as a fun-loving vehicle that could be enjoyed at the beach or in the mountains. Utilizing a modified Karmann Ghia Chassis and Beetle drivetrain meant that access to the prolific Volkswagen dealership network for convenient service would never be far away.

Ownership History

This 1973 Volkswagen “Thing” was purchased by the current owner in Arizona, in 2022 and possibly leaving the state for the first time since it was new.
