Description

The first-generation Ford Mustang underwent its final redesign for 1971, and it grew bigger in nearly every way. This considerable size difference over previous models, accentuated by an elongated design, made these final first-generation Mustangs appear even more imposing.

Stylistically, little changed for 1972, with the only obvious difference being the Mustang name on the rear deck lid (the letters were smaller, written in script, and moved to the right). Under the hood, horsepower was now calculated in a SAE “net” form, rather than at the crank, and so figures plunged. Five engines were offered, ranging from the 98 horsepower, 250-cubic-inch inline-six to the 275 horse, 351 four-barrel H.O. V8.

This 1972 Mustang Hardtop Coupe is powered by a 351 Cleveland V8 with a two-valve intake, a popular choice for its performance upgrade and reasonable upcharge. The car’s floor pans and inner trunk show mostly surface rust, with no holes or rotting in the floor pans, the inner portion of the trunk floor, or the inner rear quarter panels.  Both doors, the hood, and the front and rear quarter panels appear to be solid, as well.

The Hardtop Coupe was the biggest seller among ’72 Mustangs, followed by the Mach 1, Grande Hardtop, Fastback, and Convertible.

Ownership History

The current owner of this unrestored 1972 Ford Mustang Hardtop Coupe purchased it in June 2021. The car has spent most of its life covered and in building storage in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii, and it was driven only short distances before being returned to storage and covered again.  The Mustang spent just a few months in Hawaii before being shipped back to the mainland by its owner, who is in the military.
