Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Since the 1950s, Fiat had marketed a number of highly desirable small-displacement, Pininfarina-designed two-seater convertibles in the United States and other export markets. The last in this series was the Fiat 124 Sport Spider, which was unveiled at the 1966 Turin Auto Show wearing stunning bodywork by American Tom Tjaarda – designer of such masterpieces as the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 and 365 California. While the 124 Sedan was powered by a standard pushrod inline-four unit, the Spider received a new dual overhead cam, aluminum crossflow head version of the 124 engine penned by ex-Ferrari engine designer Aurelio Lampredi. The engine went up and down in displacement over the years and powered several Fiats, Lancias, and Alfa Romeos into the 1990s, even becoming the winningest engine of all time in the World Rally Championship. Its superb engine was paired with a sophisticated chassis featuring front strut-type suspension and a coil-spring live rear axle, as well as four-wheel disc brakes. Today, these Fiat Spiders remain enjoyable drivers and an ideal entry point into collector car ownership.
