Description

“A Dodge Charger? A piece of sculpture? . . . Brownlie and his associates have come up with the best-styled new car for 1971.” That’s what Car and Driver said of the new third generation Charger. While it still rode on the same “B-Body” platform as the previous generations, design chief Bill Brownlie and his team gave the ’71 a totally new design, with sleek “fuselage” styling that looked much different from the former models, yet keeping familiar Charger design cues. The Dodge brochure said of the 1972 Charger, “Looking for styling that’s got motion when standing still? …Look no further. Here comes Dodge Charger. And you’re going to love it.” The new Charger was more than just a pretty face, as the sleek shape produced NASCAR Grand National championships in 1971, 1972, 1974, and 1975.

This 1972 Charger is one of the well-equipped SE (Special Edition) models, which Dodge called “the rationally priced personal luxury car.” Powered by Chrysler’s new for ‘72 400 cu-in big block V8, the successor to the famed 383, and backed by the TorqueFlite automatic transmission, it’s one of only 2,956 SE models equipped with this combination in 1972.
