Description

After walking away from the project that would later become the first true Japanese sports car, the world-beating Toyota 2000GT, constant urging from Nissan’s North American President Yutaka Katayama saw the Japanese automaker return to the performance car segment in 1969. Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October of that year, the Datsun 240Z had a starting price of $3,626 in the US, making it cheaper than the established British sports cars of the day and almost half the price of the 2000GT. The 240Z was as quick as it looked, equipped with independent suspension on all four corners, front disc brakes, and a high-revving 2.4-liter straight-six engine supplying 150 horsepower. To Mr. Katayama’s credit, the new sports car was the success he had predicted, with strong sales figures continuing to rise in the United States as muscle cars became more and more constricted by emissions standards. Replaced in 1974 by the 2.6-liter 260Z, the 240Zs have now become true collector’s items for their E-Type-inspired good looks and spectacular reliability.
