The Citroën DS looked and drove like nothing else on the road when it was unveiled in 1955, setting the benchmark for space-age design and engineering for decades to come. Beneath its radical, sloping coachwork was an industry-first self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension system which also powered the brakes, clutch, and steering. The system relied on a seven-cylinder axial pump powered by the engine, working alongside a high-pressure regulator, a fluid reservoir, and six spheres filled with nitrogen to provide a seamless ride that would not be matched by any automaker for several years. The innovation didn’t stop there, as the DS was also one of the first mass-market cars to feature electronic fuel injection, disc brakes, and directional swiveling headlights. In fact, the engine was one of the only conventional components of the DS – an overhead-valve four-cylinder derived from the engine of the 11CV Traction Avant. The lineup was divided between the up-market DS and the simpler ID model until 1970 saw the end of ID production in favor of the D Spécial and D Super. Even these less complex versions of the iconic DS retained its groundbreaking hydropneumatic suspension, steering, and brakes, making them highly sought after today.
