Description

The 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special was a pinnacle of American luxury motoring in the early 1970s. As part of Cadillac’s prestigious Fleetwood line, the 60 Special was a full-size, four-door sedan that emphasized comfort, elegance, and technological sophistication. Built on GM’s C-body platform, it shared its underpinnings with the DeVille but featured a longer wheelbase and more opulent interior appointments.

Under the hood, the 1972 Fleetwood 60 Special was powered by a massive 472 cubic-inch (7.7-liter) V8 engine. Paired with a Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission, the luxury car was designed for serene cruising rather than sporty driving. It offered advanced features for its time, including automatic climate control, and had power windows and seats with optional leather upholstery.

Stylistically, the 1972 model retained Cadillac’s signature sharp lines and imposing grille but with subtle refinements such as a revised bumper and grille design. The Fleetwood 60 Special also included exclusive trim, Fleetwood badging, and a more formal roofline, distinguishing it from the more common DeVille. The ’72 model year was also notable as the last before major federal safety and emissions regulations began to significantly alter automotive design.

This 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 has been in the same Washington family since 1974.

Ownership History

The Washington seller of this 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 has owned it since December 1998, but it has been part of his family much longer than that. “The Fleetwood was originally purchased new in March 1972 from C. Dixon Cadillac in Hollywood, California, by the CEO of a Savings and Loan in the Los Angeles area. My uncle worked for the CEO, and in March 1973 he purchased the car from his boss for my aunt. She owned it until I bought it in 1998. The car has always been garaged, to my knowledge. It runs and drives great, has the impressive V-8 original exhaust rumble, and readily captures the attention of those who love to reminisce about the great car era of the 1960s and ’70s.”
