Description

As classic European sports cars go the early “longhood” Porsche 911 is about as classic as they come. Available with a variety of engine sizes, two different body styles, and a seemingly endless amount of fantastic color choices, the 911 is the result of Porsche’s tireless efforts to improve the breed through racing. Constructed with competition-level technology, Porsche endowed the 911 with forged aluminum wheels, dry-sump lubrication, torsion bar suspension, a dog-leg transmission, and a lightweight magnesium engine case.

The great Mark Donohue tested four different Porsche 911 models for Car and Driver (March 1969), and the magazine reported, “The 125 horsepower 911T turned out to be everybody's favorite … What really made the Targa a standout in a group of outstanding cars was the overall balance it exhibited.” Surprisingly, the testers even discovered the Targa “turned out to be much the quieter car.”

As a result of the 911’s sporting nature and competition breeding, many early models have been modified in some way, with original, preserved examples rarer with each passing year. This 1971 911 T Targa is one such example that was refurbished in its original color and trim. It was acquired by the seller in 2014 from its original owner.

Ownership History

Built in December 1970, this 1971 Porsche 911T Targa was purchased new through Classic Porsche Audi of Cincinnati, Ohio, and was acquired by the seller in 2014, from its original owner (copy of original title and pictures with original owner included).

The Porsche Production Specifications certificate shows that it came from the factory in Light Ivory paint with a black leatherette interior. The consignor states the Porsche "underwent body restoration and was repainted the same color by Metalkraft of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the late 2010s, which included rust repairs in the front suspension area along with the installation of metal patch panels on the door bottoms, left fender, left quarter panel, and rockers. Replacement B-pillar support braces and A-pillar panel lowers were also installed at that time, the Targa top was refurbished, and the weatherstripping replaced. The left door was repaired and repainted in 2023 (after a scratch during transport for scheduled service). More recent work is said to have included rebuilding the carburetors, repacking the front wheel bearings, and installing a replacement oil tank as well as replacing the bushings for the throttle rod, accelerator pedal, and steering shaft. The car keeps as much of the originality of the car as possible. The car has no rust and drives and handles beautifully."
