Description

The 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ was a revelation in the personal luxury car segment, blending muscle car performance with upscale styling. Introduced as part of the second generation that began in 1969, the Grand Prix SJ was the high-performance variant of the Model J, inspired by the naming conventions of the 1930s Duesenberg automobiles, and the long hood, short deck design, and distinctive pointed grille, had hints of those classics.

Built on a unique 118-inch wheelbase version of GM’s A-body platform, the 1970 Grand Prix was essentially a stretched GTO. The SJ trim came standard with a 370-horsepower 455 cubic inch V8 engine, replacing the 428 from the previous year, and offered a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, performance suspension, and upgraded interior appointments.

Luxury touches included woodgrain trim, bucket seats, and a center console, while optional features like power accessories and air conditioning made it a comfortable cruiser. The 1970 model also featured minor styling updates from 1969, such as revised taillights and grille detailing.

With the heart and soul of a GTO under the longest hood ever on an American car, the 1970 Grand Prix was another major hit in John DeLorean’s playbook. No wonder this SJ is still under the care of the original owner.
